Can Porous Granite Be Refinished?

Q. Our dark granite counters are smooth but porous. No amount of cleaning, polishing, sealing leaves a lustrous, even finish. We have light granite counters in another home that clean and polish with no imperfections. Can they be refinished and polished?

A. Unfortunately, our expert feels that this is not a DIY project. A reputable stone restoration contractor will be able to correctly identify and resolve the problem and give your granite the lustrous, even finish you want and apply a sealer to inhibit staining, since it is porous.
