How to Remove Chocolate S’more Stains on Stone Hearth

Q. We have 4 chocolate stains on our natural stone hearth. The stains have been there just a few days. We got off the actual chocolate (probably Hersey’s chocolate for smores) and tried to clean the stain with a windex surface cleaner. It helped but stains remain. How should we proceed? This is at our condo and we will only be here a few days to clean it.

A. You will need to apply a poultice using a strong hydrogen peroxide solution and an absorbent medium. Use the kind of hydrogen peroxide that hair stylists use, that is, 20 volume, which you can find at a beauty supply store. Do not use regular hydrogen peroxide from the drug store, because it is too weak. For the absorbent medium, use any of the following:

  • Stonecare PRO Signature Professional Stone Poultice Powder
  • Clays and fullers earth
  • Talc
  • Chalk (whiting)
  • Sepiolite (hydrous magnesium silicate)
  • Diatomaceous earth
  • Methyl cellulose
  • Flour

We hope you succeed in removing the stain, but if not, contact one of our vetted, highly qualified stone and tile restoration contractors. Find one in your area here Find a PRO.
