Possible silicone stain on Blue Macauba slab

Q: We made a Blue Macauba conferance table out of 2cm slab. We installed 3/4" plywood on the back of the table with clear silicone spots. This table was in our shop for over a month before we crated it up to ship across the country. The owner ended up storing the table in the crate with the sides open for allmost 2 years. Now he has set the table up. Now there is a pattern of round dark stains across the table that appear to be from the silicone that was used on the back to attach the plywood. Does anyone if it is possible to remove these stains? We have been useing silicone for this aplication for 25 years and never seen this happen.

A: This is a problem with some stones, and some silicones. I have had some success removing these stains, but it is a VERY tedious process. The first thing you need to do is remove the top from the plywood and remove as much silicone as you can. Then you need to apply a poultice with methlyene chloride. (Follow the safety precautions on the label when handling any chemical.) It may take several poultices to pull it out IF it comes out at all. I would make three to four attempts and if you do not see results after that then its not likely to come out. You can also try torching it out with a butane torch, but be very careful.
