How to remove white spots on marble

Q. I recently washed the mirrors about the marble or granite tiles with vinegar. Now there are spots on the tiles. Is there a way to remove these? It feels a little rough on the top of the spots as if the coating came off a bit. What can I do?

A. The roughness you are describing is damage to the stone called etching. Vinegar, as well as all acidic cleaning products should be avoided altogether on any marble or other calcite based stones.

You need to polish out the etching with a good marble polishing powder or paste. We recommend the Stonecare PRO Signature Marble Polishing Paste from www.Stonecarecentral.com, or better yet, the Marble Repair Kit which contains the paste as well as an excellent stone safe cleaner and a polish that you can use to spruce up your marble on occasion.

You should be able to resolve the etching yourself. Sometimes, if the damage is too severe or too large of an area, it's best left to a stone restoration contractor. If you happen to need one, here's the best resource: www.stoneandtilepros.com. Select the Find a PRO tab to find one in your area.
